Spiritual Hopping as Resistance

Moving between retreats, traditions, and teachers at the rate that keeps the felt-event of seeking in motion — so the felt-event of being-found, and the ordinary life that would follow, never has to arrive.

A simple explanation

There is a thread of meaning running through your life — a knowing, a longing, a glimpse that returns — and there is a sequence of teachers, traditions, and retreats that have all, at different times, almost taken you to it. Each was the right path until the moment they almost were. Then a reason arrived: the tradition was too monastic, the teacher had a blind spot, a new lineage had become available.

This is what distinguishes spiritual hopping from honest seeking. The openings are not fake. The longing is not performative. It is just that the seeking has become the destination, and the ordinary life that would follow being-found is more exposing than the seeking ever was.

An everyday example

You spend a week at a Vipassana retreat at thirty-one and return with something you do not have a name for. For two months, mornings have a different texture. By month three, the texture has thinned. You read about a non-dual teacher whose pointing seems more direct. You attend a satsang. The room reopens what the retreat opened. By month three after the satsang, the opening has thinned. You sign up for a plant medicine ceremony. The ceremony reopens what the satsang reopened.

A decade later, you have a vocabulary spanning four traditions and a daily life that has not reorganised around any of them. Each opening was real. None were carried.

Why do my retreat openings never carry into ordinary life?

Because carrying them would require the ordinary life to change, and the ordinary life is precisely what the seeking was, in part, a flight from. The Threat System is not the only voice in this loop — the Meaning System is also involved, asked for depth and supplying the texture of depth in the form of the next retreat. The peak experience is unbearable to integrate into a job, a marriage, a body that is ageing, a city that does not change. So the system goes looking again.

The System is not malicious. It is choosing the response that produces the most felt-meaning per week with the least exposure to the ordinary. The next retreat feels like deepening. Sitting with the previous opening in your unchanged Tuesday feels like flattening. The trade looks rational until you measure it across a decade of peaks.

The behavioral loop

A loop that hides because the substitute uses the language of the thing itself:

  1. Trigger — an opening arrives, often at a retreat, a ceremony, or a long sit: a glimpse of something the ordinary life does not normally hold.
  2. Soft spike — the body registers, for a fraction of a second, the cost of carrying the opening into the unchanged life waiting at home.
  3. Threat verdict — the System classifies the carrying as the danger and issues a re-route: not the integration, route to the next opening.
  4. Substitute pursuit — research begins, a new teacher is found, the next retreat is booked, a new lineage's vocabulary enters the home.
  5. Seeking behaviour — reading, listening, planning, telling friends about the next thing, the small dopamine of the new horizon.
  6. Brief clarity — the system reads the new horizon as continued depth. The System logs success.
  7. Residue — the previous opening, uncarried, fades. The ordinary life remains unchanged. The next retreat must be deeper to feel like the last.
  8. Re-entry — the new retreat arrives and the loop runs again, slightly faster, with a slightly more refined vocabulary about what depth means.

Emotional drivers

Four feelings, often stacked:

What your nervous system does

The opening at a retreat begins as a deep parasympathetic state — the body softening into something like trust, the protective edge dissolving, attention widening. On returning home, the Threat System registers the gap between this state and the demands of the ordinary day. A low-grade sympathetic edge returns: a tightening at the inbox, a quiet contempt for an unawakened spouse, a flicker of grief about the body the practice did not preserve.

Over weeks, the gap closes from the wrong direction — the opening fades rather than the ordinary changing. The System flags the fading as a need for the next retreat. The loop runs again. Over years, the body learns to expect the next retreat and to relax less deeply into the ordinary in the meantime.

The DojoWell interpretation

Spiritual hopping is one of the more sophisticated examples of false-progress density in MDT. The Meaning System's original ask was integration — the carrying of a glimpsed truth into the texture of an ordinary life. The substitute it supplied was a felt-event of seeking. They share a surface property: both involve practice, both involve teachers, both look from the outside like the path. They are opposite on the inside.

A carried opening leaves a deposit — the marriage softens, the work changes shape, the body is met differently, the ordinary day holds something it did not hold before. An uncarried opening leaves residue: the peak fades, the next retreat must be sharper, and the gap between vocabulary and life widens. Density is low not because any tradition was inadequate but because this relationship to practice was not the answer to the question the System was asked.

The density signature is false_progress because the system logs each retreat as a clean win. The depth language reads, to its owner, as evidence of a serious path. The cost stays hidden until the gap between the decade of retreats and the unchanged ordinary life becomes loud enough to break the verdict.

Seeking is not the problem and is not the enemy. Seeking that lands in an ordinary life and reorganises it is a clean meaning signal. Seeking that arrives in place of the ordinary it would have to inhabit is the substitute. The work is to tell which is which.

How do I tell seeking from running?

You ask one question of the next retreat you have booked. What in my ordinary life is the retreat arriving in place of? Not what it is in service of — what it is instead of. A hard conversation. A vocational reckoning. A body to be met. A grief to be sat with at home.

Three checks, in order of difficulty:

  1. Look at the carry. What from your last retreat is still alive in your ordinary Tuesday? If nothing is, the next retreat is substituting.
  2. Notice the booking moment. Is the relief arriving when the booking is made or when the practice is carried? Honest seeking relieves on carrying. Hopping relieves on booking.
  3. Ask one question of the next teacher. What does this teacher ask of my ordinary life? If the answer is nothing different from the last one, the seeking is the destination.

Practical steps

  1. Skip the next retreat and sit at home for the same number of days. Not as protest. As experiment. The retreat you do not take is the most honest data you can collect.
  2. Identify the ordinary life the seeking is standing near. Most hopping clusters around a single domain — relationship, vocation, body, place — that the openings have refused to enter. Naming it converts an unconscious substitution into a visible pattern.
  3. Carry one teaching from the last retreat into one ordinary situation this week. Not a programme. One teaching, one situation. Carrying metabolises openings; further retreats do not.
  4. Install a moratorium on new teachers for six months. Not a vow. A floor. The System's prediction that you need a new lineage now is almost always wrong inside the integration window.
  5. Track the carry as data. A weekly note — what from the last opening was alive this week, and where — is a more honest log than any retreat schedule.

Reflection questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is all spiritual exploration avoidance?

No. Exploring traditions until you find a path that fits the texture of your life is honest and is fully load-bearing. Spiritual hopping is the specific pattern where the exploration is the destination — where each opening is left uncarried and the next teacher is the relief. The signal is whether the seeking ends when something works, or whether the working is the cue to keep moving.

What about people who hold multiple traditions in genuine synthesis?

Synthesis is real and clean when each tradition has been integrated into an ordinary life. The check is whether the multiple traditions are downstream of carried practice or upstream of uncarried longing. Honest synthesis shows in the texture of the day, not in the vocabulary of the seeker.

How is this different from spiritual bypassing?

Spiritual bypassing uses practice to avoid feeling a specific painful material. Spiritual hopping uses the seeking of practice to avoid the integration of any practice. They often co-occur and reinforce each other, but the mechanisms are distinct: bypassing happens inside a practice; hopping happens between them.

What if the longing for the next retreat is genuine?

It almost always is. The substitute would not work if the longing were fake. The question is not whether the longing is real but what it is in service of. A longing pointed at integration carries the ordinary life with it. A longing pointed at the next opening leaves the ordinary life behind.

How does this connect to Meaning Density?

Spiritual hopping is a clean example of the false_progress density signature. The effort of seeking is real, the language of depth is real, but the deposit is near-zero because nothing in the ordinary life reorganises. The uncarried openings accumulate as residue, the next retreat must be sharper to feel like the last, and the gap between vocabulary and life widens. The equation reveals what the body already knew: the seeking was felt, but the meaning was in the carrying.
