A simple explanation

You know what the task is. You agree it is worth doing. You may even have set aside time. And at the exact moment of attempting to begin, something stops. Not laziness, not refusal — a specific friction, located precisely at the start.

Once started, the task is often fine. Sometimes enjoyable. The friction is not against the work itself; it is against the act of crossing from not-doing into doing. That crossing has its own physics, and for some nervous systems it is heavier than the work that follows.

An everyday example

Tuesday morning. The report is due Friday. You open the laptop, open the document, re-read the brief. You open a tab to check something you already know. You re-read the brief again. You draft the first sentence in your head. You don't type it. You stand up to make tea. You sit down. You re-read the brief.

At noon the document is still empty. You have not been resting — the loop has been running all morning. The Threat System fired at every approach to the first sentence and you took the off-ramp every time, each off-ramp small enough to feel reasonable. By 2pm you finally type a sentence. The rest of the report takes ninety minutes. The morning is gone and the task was not the hard part. Starting was.

Why can't I start things even when I want to?

Because wanting and starting are run by different parts of the system, on different time horizons, with different signals.

Wanting is the slow system's vote: this matters, this aligns with the life I want. Starting is the fast system's permission: the Threat System has to release the brake at the moment of contact. The slow vote does not automatically translate into the fast release. The gap is often misread as character (I'm not disciplined, I'm lazy) when it is structural — the System is reading the start point and finding something to protect against.

  1. Name the specific shape before re-approaching. One sentence: the System is reading uncertainty / boredom / possible failure / sensory aversion. This converts the wall from monolithic to addressable.

  5. Do not moralise the morning. The shame-tail of I should have started earlier loads the next approach with pre-emptive aversion. The System was doing its job. The work is to read what it was protecting, not to add self-judgement.
