This is Internal Rivalry. It happens when different behavioral systems (e.g., Reward wanting to go, Threat wanting to stay) are fighting for control of the Narrative & Identity system. In this model, we name the "moment thoughts don't compete" as a state of Alignment. When your systems stop fighting, the rivalry ends. This doesn't mean you only have one thought; it means your thoughts are no longer "at war" with each other, leading to a state of internal peace and clarity.
You "stop choosing sides". Acknowledge both sides of the mental rivalry as valid data from different systems. By not letting the Narrative system join the fight, the conflict loses its fuel. This "neutral witnessing" allows the rivalry to dissolve into a "composite orientation," where you can hold multiple viewpoints without the friction of a "mental civil war," preserving your energy for lived meaning.
